Ottawa-based Spartan Bioscience Inc. has launched its personal DNA analyzer for use where speed and convenience are important in research experiments and non-batched testing for infectious diseases. The molecular diagnostics company today announced the commercial launch of its Spartan DX real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA analyzer, which aims to provide DNA results in 30 minutes or less for four samples at a time. "In the same way that mainframe computers gave rise to personal computers, mainframe DNA machines are giving rise to personal DNA analyzers," said Spartan CEO Dr. Paul Lem in a statement. "DNA is in every organism on the planet and there will be major benefits as DNA testing becomes widely available." The company's product is an alternative to batched, mainframe-style DNA machines which are designed for highly trained scientists in high-throughput environments.
